Our dueling Timeflies pair released their weekly track Tuesday night, “Game of Thrones,” inspired by the season finale of the hit show, and delivered to us a track that’s back beat rivals what they created with “Under the Sea (the original)” merely on creativity alone.
Finding a Timeflies track that’s pace is set with a wordless back beat has been few and far between of late for the guys (“Hot in Here,” “So Good,” etc.), but Tuesday’s “Game of Thrones” was a truly unique, dubbed version of the hit shows theme song. Frankly I dare you to find a better dubbed version of the theme online.
The boys regressed to what they are known for doing best – freestyling by drawing words from a hat (or in this video’s case a knight’s helmet, keeping with the theme). When Cal freestyles, however, the lyrical strength of the song is never as good as when he pre-writes the lyrics (See any of their EP, “The Scotch Tape”). This we can all understand, agree?
Even so, Cal and Rez continue their streak of hits after ending their touring season a few weeks ago, releasing “Game of Thrones” to follow in the big footsteps of “So Good” and “Hot in Here.”
In this week’s video, as may be different than others, there is something to be said about the entertainment value of the video itself. As Rez tweeted Tuesday, he had a lot of fun making filming this video – and it shows. Bring together a medieval beer or two, a bunch of broken plastic swords, and taped footage of the Medieval Times show the crew attended and you have one clever, hysterical video.
Although the typically great lyricism drops a bit (besides the shot at “that bitch Aaron Carter”), the song as a whole resonates with the Timeflies followers because of its top-notch beat and its unique video.
As long as the crew doesn’t get in trouble for using show footage, which I’m sure was mentioned over the not-so-medieval loud speaker prior to the start, I’d say they finish this week a another summer success.
