Cal and Rez unleash their remake of an old 1990s summertime classic, “Summer Girls” by LFO, this week, but fail to live up to expectations set by their recent creative streak (last week, “Game of Thrones”).
Many I’ve talked to have voiced their admiration for this week’s song is high, but I wonder if it’s only high because of their old-time love for the LFO anthem – like it would’ve been in the Timeflies crew’s recent “Hot in Here” remake.
The song lacks creativity, Cal rapping the lyrics set by the LFO trio in the ’90s instead of his own. That is, until about the 3-minute mark when he memorably freestyles about the NBA playoffs, which sports fans will love (see 2:45-3:07)
The background beat – LFOs song, only mixed – and the lyrics are weak in this one. Rez’s beat-making ability is just too far absent in this week’s song for my liking and that ruins my ability to focus during the whole four-minute song.
Certainly, the duo gets credit for trying to bring back this hit. If they’d nailed it like they have other songs, then we could all have a summer-long anthem on our hands we can’t stop listening to. Unfortunately, it’s weaker than expected after seeing the title of this week’s video.
Most will continue to favor the great LFO song we all remember from our teen years, which, I suppose, is to to be expected even if you like it or not. As point out in last week’s review, the Timeflies crew has been on a hot streak. This week, they jumped in the pool to cool off, despite Cal’s memorable solo.

What’s wrong with doing a plain old cover every once in a while? Especially if it’s done better than the original.
